Hogmanay es el nombre que recibe el día de Nochevieja en Escocia. La gente suele organizar fiestas y, cuando suenan las doce campanadas, cantan Auld Lang Syne, una canción típica escocesa, y brindan por el nuevo año. Después es costumbre salir a visitar a los amigos para dar juntos la bienvenida al año que comienza. La costumbre de ser los primeros en hacerlo se denomina first footing.
